UNACADEMY

UNACADEMY USES LIMELIGHT NETWORKS TO CONNECT MILLIONS OF STUDENTS WITH NEW EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN INDIA

Unacademy is one of the fastest growing online learning platforms in India, delivering more than 1 million video views per day and offering more than 2,500 live classes daily. Unacademy also maintains an archive of its courses covering programming, business management, personal finance and other disciplines, giving students on-demand access to older lectures via its app.

UNACADEMY CHALLENGE

Globally, the edtech sector is estimated to grow to $35 billion by 2025, with start-up Unacademy poised to be a dominant player.

In order to compete with other leading brands, manage exponential growth and continue to attract top educators, the online learning platform needed a CDN partner that could deliver a consistently fast, high-quality viewing experience, regardless of location or device.

India has the world’s largest population of 5–24 year olds, which is why Unacademy has focused its resources in the region—but reaching a significant sector of learners was proving difficult due to slow network speed and sporadic surges outside major Tier 1 cities

"We’re seeing unprecedented growth and engagement from learners in smaller towns and cities—we have more than 400 top educators delivering live classes every day, regardless of the student’s location."

GAURAV MUNJAL, CEO, Unacademy

"Our customers are students—they’re impatient and very sensitive to video load time. We needed a CDN that could deliver fast video content and file downloads—it’s essential."

"In the past year, we’ve seen 2X growth, from 10 million views to 20 million views. Limelight Networks scaled up delivery accordingly and performed better than competitors."

UNACADEMY CRITERIA

Unacademy was primarily interested in improving viewer experience by optimizing delivery speed. The current infrastructure in India doesn’t provide good connectivity, and studies from Limelight and others show that just a 5 second delay in the start of a video will turn off most viewers.

UNACADEMY PROCESS

Unacademy originally began in 2010 as a YouTube channel, but soon expanded with its own app to offer free courses and launched a paid-subscription service—Unacademy Plus. The growth in viewership precipitated the need for a more robust CDN platform.

Unacademy evaluated Limelight Networks, comparing performance with that of other leading CDNs. The platform was tested in Tier 1, 2 and 3 cities in India.

UNACADEMY SOLUTION

In addition to providing faster delivery speeds for video and file downloads for Unacademy, Limelight also focused on improving the overall customer experience for Unacademy—saving them time, simplifying the management of configurations and providing a proactive support system.

UNACADEMY PERFORMANCE

Following a 3-week test period, Unacademy determined that Limelight Networks out-paced the competitors, with high performance delivery and better economy.

Limelight’s CDN uses its private network backbone to transmit data, thereby completely bypassing internet congestion in the middle-mile. Additionally, it’s dense architecture allows very high caching efficiencies for content, bringing it closer to end users, resulting in reduced latency and very short video load times.

UNACADEMY PARTNERSHIP

After experiencing what the top three CDN providers can offer during the past 1.5 years, Unacademy today relies on Limelight as its primary CDN for all video content delivery.
